Dutch Health Care Performance Report

From a policy perspective, it is important to monitor how well the various parts of the health care system are functioning and whether all the people are benefiting equally from the resources provided. In view of the continually rising costs of health care, it is also relevant to find out whether those resources are producing sufficient returns – how efficient is the health care system?

The Dutch Ministry of Health has commissioned National Institute of Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) to assess the performance of the Dutch health care system by monitoring trends in the quality, accessibility and costs of health care, using a finite set of indicators. Where possible, the performance will also be compared internationally.

The findings are presented on the Dutch website, www.gezondheidszorgbalans.nl, which will be updated every six months. Next to the website, RIVM will produce the Dutch Health Care Performance Report every four years. The next Dutch report is to be published in May 2014, to be followed by the English edition in September 2014.
